West Palm Beach Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

We see a great number of individuals with headaches in our West Palm Beach office, and Dr. Dennis has been able to help many of them. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that 50% of all adults have difficulties with some manner of headache problems, so this really isn’t surprising. One of the most typical varieties of headaches which our patients endure is cervicogenic headache which, luckily for us, chiropractic can often help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that starts from problems in the cervical spine. It can easily be caused by an issue with either the spine itself (particularly, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it could be due to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine creates compression or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can generate headache pain.

How can you recognize if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Other than obtaining a diagnosis from a healthcare professional, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes followed by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps

Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever problem is generating them is remedied, it is crucial to get treatment instead of just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective solution, and one that offers a considerable amount of headache pain relief.

In one study released in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts evaluated 80 people who had recurring cervicogenic headaches. One-half received chiropractic care and the other fifty percent engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the most beneficial results.

In particular, this study noted that chiropractic adjustments offered patients better pain relief and lessened the frequency of headaches that occurred. On top of that, it also mitigated the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.

To find out what Dr. Dennis can do for you and your headache pain, call us today. We'll do our best to get you the pain relief you need!

Chiropractic Works for Ankle Sprains

West Palm Beach natural ankle sprain treatmentWe see quite a few patients in our West Palm Beach office with ankle sprains but Dr. Dennis has had a lot of success helping them heal more quickly. Why are ankle sprains so common and how can your chiropractor help?

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), an estimated 25,000 men and women in the US sprain their ankles every day. As a matter of fact, these injuries make up almost half of all sports injuries, causing people to spend time away from the activities they enjoy most.

Like any injury, there are many causes of ankle sprains. The most common is inversion, or when the ankle rolls inward. This injury can happen due to one forceful movement, or it can develop over time, and activities that increase the risk for this type of ankle sprain include running and jumping. You're also at risk if you have past ankle injuries, poor posture or balance, weak muscles, and reduced range of motion.

How Can Chiropractic Treatments and Dr. Dennis Help?

A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics set out to discover chiropractic's role when it comes to ankle sprain recovery. The authors enrolled 33 individuals between the ages of 18 and 45 who had a history of ankle inversion sprains, who were experiencing tenderness and/or pain, and had not re-injured the ankle in the previous six weeks.

18 of the subjects were assigned to participate in rehabilitation and the other 15 patients received chiropractic adjustments in addition to rehab. Each individual had five full weeks of treatments, with the rehabilitation group receiving therapy seven days a week and the rehab plus chiropractic group receiving therapy six out of the seven days.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Ankle Sprains

The study found that the people who had both rehabilitation and chiropractic fared the best at the 4-week mark when it came to pain and joint restriction. Also, no bad effects were reported, showing that this treatment option is safe.

Fibromyalgia Treatment with Chiropractic

West Palm Beach natural fibromyalgia treatmentIf you are afflicted by fibromyalgia, you are not alone, as Dr. Dennis sees many patients with this particular problem in our West Palm Beach chiropractic office. As a matter of fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that roughly two percent of all adults in the US have fibromyalgia. Thankfully, chiropractic care is one treatment option that can provide positive results.

Research Proves Chiropractic Eases Fibromyalgia

In a medical study released in mid-2015, 215 adults with fibromyalgia were assessed based on factors ranging from pain to quality of sleep to the levels of depression symptoms or anxiety they felt. Then they were divided into two groups with one group receiving a multi-modal therapy plan for three months and the second group receiving the same approach plus chiropractic adjustments (specifically, to the upper neck tissues) for the same length of time.

The subjects who received chiropractic care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary therapy approach reported greater results in all areas (pain, sleep, depression, and anxiety) at three months post-treatment when compared to the study patients who received multi-modal treatment without chiropractic care. In addition, those positive results were lasting as the people reported continued improvement one full year later.

Fibromyalgia can substantially reduce your quality of life, both psychologically and physically. If you're struggling with fibromyalgia, we might be able to help.

You don't have to suffer! To see what Dr. Dennis can do for your fibromyalgia pain, call our West Palm Beach chiropractic office today.

Chiropractic Care Effective for Herniated Disc Pain

West Palm Beach chiropractic disc herniation treatmentUnfortunately, quite a few of our West Palm Beach patients are familiar with the pain associated with a herniated disc all too well. On a positive note, Dr. Dennis has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of research studies have verified that chiropractic care can help patients recover from this kind of condition.

Research on Herniated Discs and Chiropractic

In one report, a group of doctors from Switzerland recruited 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their low back and legs due to a disc herniation (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each individual then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the area of his or her disc herniation.

Data was gathered after the initial treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to establish what kind of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to treating this particular problem. Among the information obtained was the individual's self-reported changes in both lumbar and leg pain.

The authors found that, overall, the study participants reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the individuals stated that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those test subjects who were defined as "chronic" still claimed an improvement in pain at a rate of 89 percent one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Case Study Shows that Chiropractic Benefits Chronic Disc Herniation Symptoms

In this paper, a 26-year-old man had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the low back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had endured these issues for more than two years after sustaining an athletic injury, and his herniated disc was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic care, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." Furthermore, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how useful chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and reducing the symptoms they cause. So, if you are suffering from back ache caused by a herniated disc and wish to find some relief, chiropractic may well be an effective solution.

Chiropractic Beneficial for Carpal Tunnel

West Palm Beach natural carpal tunnel treatmentDr. Dennis sees a lot of people struggling with carpal tunnel syndrome in our busy West Palm Beach chiropractic practice. While some people think that the source of this wrist-related pain is muscular, it's really a syndrome that arises from the nerves--and not just the nerves in your hands.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A recent study printed in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy evaluated 71 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who were diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. Upon investigating the subjects' neck range of motion, the researchers discovered that the patients had reduced cervical flexibility when compared to a healthy control group.

In addition, it was also discovered that the level of the women's reported carpal tunnel discomfort was linked to the lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In short, the less mobility in the neck, the higher the level of pain.

This study is very important, as you can't effectively address a condition until you fully understand its source. By recognizing that the root of carpal tunnel pain is in the neck, this means that natural approaches such as chiropractic can often restore normal function, eliminating the need for risky operations.

If you have carpal tunnel pain, call our West Palm Beach office and ask how Dr. Dennis can help you get relief!

Chiropractic and Medical Care: An Effective Combination

West Palm Beach back pain treatmentWe see quite a few people with back pain in our West Palm Beach office, and Dr. Dennis has been able to help a lot of them find relief with chiropractic care. However, recovering from back pain doesn't necessarily mean having to decide between chiropractic care and medical care, as many individuals utilize both types of care with great success.

Study Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well Together

In a report published by the academic journal Spine experts1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who reported both acute discomfort and restricted function due to back symptoms. Some of the study participants engaged in treatment via standard medical care, while the remainder were given chiropractic care along with regular medical care, as researchers wanted to see which patients fared better.

The authors determined that the group that received standard medical care in combination with chiropractic care scored "significantly better" than the group that received medical care alone; 73 percent reported positive benefits compared to just 17% of the medical treatment only group who reported the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at two and four weeks.

Accordingly, combining these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering advantages when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic care and medical approaches can work together, chiropractic offers some distinct strengths over medical treatment.

Where Chiropractic Care Is Successful

Although it may seem as if each approach plays a 50-50 role, there is one major benefit that chiropractic has over medical care and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, one bit of research conducted at UCLA2 that was printed in the American Journal of Public Health reports that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than people undergoing medical care.

According to the researchers, the main aspects that patients preferred over medical care were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't surprising, as chiropractors typically spend much more time consulting with their patients as to how they can improve their health on their own, as well as outlining more carefully what to expect from chiropractic.

Chiropractic Care Offers a Non-Invasive Approach

Without a doubt, the strategies associated with chiropractic are very different than those provided with medical treatment, but a great deal of the difference is the fact that chiropractic is a natural approach to health and well-being. Rather than focusing on simply relieving the symptoms, chiropractic means searching for the primary cause of your pain, which often results in greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

In addition, while medication is sometimes helpful for managing certain conditions, many health issues respond well to natural forms of treatment like chiropractic care. This means fewer negative responses to drugs and more permanent results.

You don't have to suffer from back pain or other health problems. Give our West Palm Beach office a call today at (561) 966-6171. We'll do our best to help you get and stay free from back pain.

Shoulder Pain and Auto Injury

We work with many auto injury cases in in our West Palm Beach office, and a widespread symptom we see in our patients is shoulder pain. Chiropractic care is an excellent way to treat shoulder pain. Let's look at how shoulder pain is caused by a crash and how Dr. Dennis can help you.

There are at least two different ways that you can get shoulder problems after a crash: by direct injury to the shoulder joint or by referred pain from the neck.

Direct trauma can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the crash, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end collision. With this type of injury, you'll often be aware of the pain shortly after the crash.

More frequently, Dr. Dennis finds that shoulder or arm pain does not immediately appear after a crash, but begins a few days or weeks after the injury. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the cervical spine. Injured ligaments or muscles in your neck can tweak nerves in your neck, causing tingling, numbness, or soreness in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.

We've treated many types of shoulder problems in our West Palm Beach office. This treatment involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural flexibility and exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.

Dr. Dennis has been helping patients in West Palm Beach since 1988, so we know what you're living with. We're here to help you, too. The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis to determine what's causing your symptoms and then we will determine an appropriate treatment plan of action. Chiropractic Can Provide Asthma Relief

West Palm Beach asthma care with chiropracticAsthma is a serious issue for many people in West Palm Beach and for a society as a whole, since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that this condition currently affects almost 19 million adults and 7 million kids in the United States. A full-blown asthma attack likely means a hospital visit. Thankfully, Dr. Dennis has helped many folks in West Palm Beach get relief from asthma symptoms.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Asthma

The medical research verifies what we see in our office. For example, a paper published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy evaluated 31 adult asthma patients after receiving four weeks of chiropractic adjustments. The authors found that the participants who received chiropractic adjustments had a 34% decrease in asthma symptoms.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics printed another asthma-based study, except this one involved kids. In this article, the 36 patients ranged from 6 to 17 years in age and their asthma was considered either mild or moderate in severity.

After 12 weeks of chiropractic adjustments, as a whole, the children reported a higher quality of life and a reduced level of severity. As a bonus, they also reported that they relied less on their bronchodilator and these positive effects lasted one year after chiropractic care was complete.

Chiropractic: Safe for Everyone

West Palm Beach Chiropractic for familiesWe see a large number of patients in our West Palm Beach clinic, and Dr. Dennis has helped many people eliminate a range of health issues. In spite of this, a common concern that seems to stop many women and men from pursuing treatment is whether or not chiropractic adjustments are safe. Well, according to three separate studies (out of countless on the topic), the answer to this question is a clear: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"

Australian Study: Chiropractic is Safe

The first article(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 women and men between the ages of 20 and 85. Each person reported suffering from spinal pain, and half of the patients received actual chiropractic care visits whereas the other half were given two fake chiropractic adjustments. Information was collected after each real or fake adjustment to determine whether or not any unpleasant reactions were caused by the actual chiropractic adjustments.

The doctors reported that nobody documented any serious negative side effects in any way after receiving one or two sessions of chiropractic care. Some individuals did state that they experienced a headache (just 9% of people) or muscle stiffness (37%) after treatment, but the effects were not serious.

Large US Survey Confirms that Chiropractic is Safe

A second research study(2), also published in the prestigious journal, Spine, was conducted in an effort to determine the safety of chiropractic care. The study group was much larger as it involved just under 20,000 individuals. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the neck, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all study participants.

Again, the investigators discovered no serious adverse side effects. The experts computed the risk of total adverse reactions to be approximately six out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the previous study, some participants did report non-serious, milder, side effects such as dizziness (less than 2%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the authors to conclude that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."

Chiropractic Care Is Safe for Children

This third study(3) is unique from the previous two pieces of research, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this case, researchers analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic treatment sessions.

Out of 5,438 chiropractic appointments made for the children, chiropractors answering the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Furthermore, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."

Based on studies like these, chiropractic care has been found to be safe and effective for everyone. To find out what chiropractic can do for you, call our West Palm Beach clinic and make an appointment today at (561) 966-6171.
